Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) endorsed Republican Michigan Senate nominee Mike Rogers after appearing alongside Rogers at a Black church in Detroit on Sunday following days of deteriorating relations between her and Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed.
Stevens’ endorsement, accentuated by the joint appearance at Detroit’s Perfecting Church, marked an unexpected twist in the Michigan Senate race, two days ahead of the midterms. It came after Stevens warned that El-Sayed was failing to reassure Jewish and Black voters who supported her in the primary.
Stevens, in a video statement, said that she believes she does not “belong” with El-Sayed’s campaign, noting El-Sayed’s recent attacks on her.
“I do not stand with Hasan Piker, who gets trafficked on our college campuses,” Stevens said, referencing El-Sayed’s joint appearances with Piker on college campuses during the primary. “A dear friend of mine earlier today was saying that education is on the ballot, and she's absolutely right. And what our students see, what our children see, and who we are as Michiganders is not hate, and is not what we are getting out from our Democratic nominee right now.”
